Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy? How does it work?

Let’s start with the big question! Psychotherapy looks different for every person as everyone is different. We’ll address the goals you have and explore how to enact change effectively. This can range from working on ways to change my day-to-day behaviour or thought patterns, to exploring deep emotional constraints to growth or confronting long-running harmful internal narratives. The process is about helping you gain the tools and skills to face these challenges, make the changes you want, and feel well-equipped for new challenges in the future.

What does psychotherapy explore? What methods do you use?

Psychotherapy can help with a variety of topics. In particular, Ellen specialises in a few areas including anxiety, depression, disordered eating/body image issues, specific phobias, OCD, and more. She is trained in a variety of models and modalities, including CBT, DBT, IFS, Existential Therapy, and others. You can learn more here. While therapy, like all things, is not a magic fix, it can be one way to find the support you need.

How long does it last/how many sessions will I need? How frequent?

This is a very common question and, as is often the case, there is no simple answer. It varies from person to person and throughout the process. Most typically, clients will initially meet weekly and then stretch out the time in-between sessions as they continue. For some people, brief therapy suits best. For others, long-term continual check-ins is preferable. This can all be explored in an initial consultation.

What does therapy cost?

Unfortunately, finances and other resources can be a barrier to psychotherapy for many. While there is a fixed fee for sessions, a few sliding scale slots are available periodically. Let us know if this option may be for you and we’ll do what we can to make it work. Insurance and tax claims can also help support the costs—again, we’ll do everything we can to make therapy accessible to you.
